As a Korean citizen who spent one third of his lifetime in the United States before entering into the new environment of Switzerland, concerns with respect to adapting and adjusting to new cultures and reflecting back to the native culture remained profoundly significant as regards asserting my own cultural identity. Originating from the question of how people with multicultural backgrounds can achieve some degree of harmonious engagement in different cultural realities, “In-between State” takes a microcosmic view of a single case of the intercultural experience of someone entering marijuana subculture within the larger culture of the United States. By illustrating the different cultural perspectives of South Korea and the United States on the subject of marijuana, this thesis project conceptualises the double-bound position of the person caught between two conflicting realities.
